DIY Technicolor Ant Print Picnic Blanket

You know how everyone keeps lamenting the end of summer? Okay, whoa, hit the brakes! It’s still summer, technically, until September 21st! So in the name of “summer,” I teamed up with Harvest Snaps to bring you this technicolor ants picnic blanket made out of a tablecloth – yes, a tablecloth!

So you keep celebratin’ summer-style and make this picnic blanket, pack a sack lunch, head to shady, grassy spot, and get your picnic on!

Supplies:

  • White tablecloth
  • Multi-surface acrylic paint, various bright colors
  • Paint brushes
  • Jumbo ant stencil – download here
  • Pen
  • Foam paper
  • Cardboard
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Rag(s)
  1. Wash and dry the tablecloth before painting on it.
  2. Download the ant stencil, size it to a regular 8.5×11 inch copier paper, and print it off. Now cut it out!
(NOTE: I know it’s super pixelated, but the point is, it’s the size you need, and the rough shape you’ll need for the blanket. So just cut out the approximate shape of the ant.)
  3. Trace the ant stencil onto the foam paper, and then cut that out.
  4. Hot glue the foam paper ant onto a piece of cardboard. Smooth out any bumps or air bubbles.
  5. Flatten out the tablecloth either on the floor or a large table in preparation of stamping the ants on it.
Apply paint to the ant stamp, place your stamp over the tablecloth, and press it down with even pressure.
  6. When you’re ready for a different color, use a damp rag to first wipe off the paint already on the stamp before applying another color to it.
NOTE: You can alternate the direction the ant is facing each time your stamp it on the tablecloth.
  7. Repeat steps 5-6 until you’ve achieved the design you desire.
Let the paint dry completely before you pack it up and use it for your picnic!
